Who We Serve
PAOT's funding supports emerging opera singers, composers, and organizations, most notably the Pasadena Vocal Competition, uplifting classical music and opera throughout the greater Pasadena area.
Why it Matters
Opera is one of the world's great artistic traditions, combining music, storytelling, theater, and visual art into an unforgettable experience. We invest in arts and arts education today, to ensure the continuation of opera's legacy for generations to come.
Our Mission
Our mission is to promote interest in and support for opera throughout the Pasadena area by investing in educational programs, supporting high-quality performances, developing future audiences, and financially assisting promising young singers and composers.

Our Vision
We envision a future where opera continues to thrive in the Pasadena area as a vibrant, accessible art form—supported by diverse audiences, exceptional emerging artists, and a community that values musical excellence.
History
Long before everything was known by its acronym, before actors maligned opera and ballet, a band of courageous Pasadena women came together to promote and sustain opera. They were the wives of 'titans of industry' and of successful entrepreneurs; some had sung on Broadway, a few were what was then known as 'career women'.
What they all had in common was a passionate love for the vocal arts which inspired them to found The Pasadena Area Opera Trust in 1972, a group dedicated to fostering interest and support of opera specifically in the Pasadena region.
Many of these women had lived through the sinking of the Titanic, The Great War, The Depression, WWII but perhaps nothing could have prepared them for the social and musical upheaval of the British Invasion, Woodstock and stadium sized rock concerts. In the wake of this, they sought to nurture an interest in opera especially in children and to support singers and composers in the first stages of their careers.
Opera was for them always preceded by the adjective "grand."
We at The Pasadena Area Opera Trust still believe opera is grand in every way; an extraordinary art form worth nurturing, preserving and championing in a current world context.
Impact
For more than five decades, PAOT has invested in organizations and artists whose work strengthens opera throughout Southern California. As the principal funding partner of the Pasadena Vocal Competition, the Trust provides grants that directly support emerging singers as they begin professional careers.
